Golden Compost Project

Local Food Matters is working in collaboration with the CSRD to develop an organic waste diversion strategy and to determine the feasibility of a compost facility in Golden & Area A.

We are gathering information from Goldens Food Waste Producers to work towards building a commercial organics waste diversion program. We would appreciate your participation in this quick survey to help us on our way towards this project.

Main reasons to compost:

Compost is a natural fertilizer made from food waste; adding compost to soil increases nutrient value and plant health.

Reduces the volume of garbage sent to landfill and extends the landfill lifespan.

The composting process allows for aerobic decomposition which reduces methane, a strong green house gas.

Much of what goes into the landfill could be diverted, composted, and returned back to the community as nourishing soil. This is an opportunity for our community to take action, make sustainability a priority, and impact change as a collective. Local Food Matters and the CSRD are hoping to bring a strategy to the major food and organic waste producers in our town to divert this waste from the landfill and reduce its associated emissions.

Our goal is to establish a commercial organic waste collection program. We will be gathering information on local capacity and logistics. We aim to develop a residential collection program in the future.

We’re looking to engage with the commercial sector and community to collaborate on a vision. We will be working on learning the needs of the local businesses alongside determining feasibility and making plans for of storage, collection, transport, and processing of the organic waste.

As a part of the community, we value your voices and would love to hear if you have any questions and suggestions.

It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it
